With the help of Always There For You, my mother can remain at home and I can continue in my work, knowing she is safe and well cared for when I'm not there. The staff, both the administration and caregivers, work to accommodate changes in my schedule, ensuring that mother's needs are always met, providing both the physical care and emotional engagment that are so important." ~Tracy Cromwell "I appreciate that Always There For You has been very flexible and accomodating to my family in finding a caregiver who is suitable in taking care of my mother with her rare form of dementia. Their kindness and understanding has been paramount to my family in trying to find the perfect fit for my mom. Thank you!" ~Gigi Yiu "My father is an Alzheimer patient and my mother has been taking care of him ~ Ricky Cheung
TREMENDOUS RELIEF WHEN IT WAS NEEDED In 2002 I returned to Richmond after 4 years away in Hong Kong teaching. My mother’s health was failing and my father needed carotid artery surgery. I did not want to be a 12-13 hour plane ride away from them at this, the waning years of their lives. It was a good thing I returned because after only 4 months of being back in Richmond, my mother had a fall. She hurt her back severely, and was in great pain. Even though she needed a lot of care at the time, I managed to do it on my own. The next fall, one year later, however, was a real turning point. She had a mini-stroke a couple of weeks after the fall and ended up in the hospital with aphasia and great disorientation. By this time I was also working almost full time and wondered, in a bit of a panic, how I was going to manage to care for my mom, as well as support my dad with his need to get out of the house, do shopping, prepare food, etc. After the initial ‘Emergency Response” team that the hospital social worker helped me set up for that weekend, I contacted “Always There For You”. And that is exactly what they were—always there for me, my mom, and my dad—for our whole family, in fact. Since that time in 2004 until her passing in 2005, we had a number of workers in our home, caring for my mom’s demanding personal needs, food preparation, cleaning, and later, when my mother was on her way to passing and in the hospital on and off for a period of over 6 weeks, our helper from “Always There For You” went in to care for her when family members couldn’t get in or needed some respite. These helpers always treated my mother like family and cared for her with kind, gentle, and cheerful hands, words, and actions. I know that her last year and days were made better by the people of this agency. I will always be truly grateful for their service. Now my dad is almost 95 and although he doesn’t need the same level of care that my mother did I still rely on our “Always There For You” helper to provide him with his meals, company, and some work around the house. Not only does she take care of my dad, but she takes care of me because I know my precious father is well cared for and cared about. ~Daya Harris
